Enterprise, AL

Enterprise, Alabama: The story goes that back in the day, the crop of the area was cotton. Then, one day the boll weevil came in and savagely destroyed all of this fine cotton, leaving the economy devastaed. In the wake of this disaster, local farmers began planting and harvesting peanuts. This turned out to be a very lucrative enterprise for Enterprise, and it revived the economy and turned that part of the state into a popular peanut producer. So, in a roundabout way, the boll weevil, by just doing what it does, helped save this town. A great story, I think.

So now, in the middle of downtown Enterprise, there is this statue of someone resembling Lady Justice holding a giant metal boll weevil over her head to honor it. These days, after being the butt of many senior pranks, the giant boll weevil is heavily guarded with cameras on every side. If the weevil is tampered with, cops respond immediately. Luckily, I was able to snag this picture before being noticed.
